Glenwood Pool History
The pool and facilities were totally renovated to open the 2004 pool season. The project was done in two phases. Phase 1 was done in the Spring of 2003, and included a renovated bathhouse and snack bar, a brand new covered pavilion for snacking or just getting out of the sun, and a new pool filter building.
Phase 2, began in the Fall of 2003, and with a little help from Hurricane Isabel helped destroy the old pool. Demolition of the old pump house and removal of the old pool was scheduled for September 29, 2003. See Glenwood Pool being demolished from September, 2003 Construction of our new L- shaped pool with 6 swim lanes in each direction, a competitive diving well with 2 one-meter diving boards, a beach entry area with fountains and bubblers for the kids, and a brand new wading pool is scheduled to be complete before year end. By October 8, 2003, we were hauling off broken concrete and excavating the pool. The hole grew for our new pool in pictures from late October. By mid-November, 2003, the pool was almost fully dug out, and only some rock in the new deep end remained to be excavated. How did we deal with some rock in the deep end? Paddock brought in a Nasty red machine and blasted away. Once the rock was blasted out, trenches could laid and created a big rockpile. By early December, Paddock was putting in the piping for the new pool. The new baby pool was formed up, and there was pipe sticking up everywhere. In mid-December, the bottom of the pool hit rock bottom. Early January 2004: The bottom of the pool was filled with concrete and covered with a blanket to dry. Weeks pass, and it seems like months. The weather was too cold, too snowy, too icy to gunnite in the walls of the pool. By mid-February, a warm spell was forecast and the icy chunks that were filling the pool were removed to make room for the concrete walls that were installed with the thaw!
It's the end of February, and finally the Gunnite gunners are at work. In two days the walls are up, and the new pool has taken shape. By early April, there has been a lot of grading, and the site is starting to take shape. The lane line and target tiles are set, and by mid-May, and we are decking the pool! A concrete pump stretches over the bathhouse, and the concrete deck flows over gravel and mesh, pipes and wires.
