CURRENT EVENTS

Fourth of July Celebration at the Big G! Sunday, July 4, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm

Come to the pool for our annual July 4 party for food, fun and games all day long! A robust concessions operation will have plenty of food for you and your family, the staff will coordinate games for the young and young-at-heart, and we'll also have some time for free swim to just cool off. This is the last day you can use your 2009 guest passes, too, so bring a friend to join in the fun. Compete in the belly flop contest, grab the greased watermelon, or bet on your favorite pool floaty in the raft races -- it's a great time for everyone.

Thanks to our fabulous swim and dive team families, we are reasonably well-stocked and staffed for a feeding frenzy on the 4th EXCEPT that we need a couple of grillers from noon to 2:30. If you can help out for a couple of hours (in the shade, near the cold drinks & ceiling fans), please email me at kjclark@erols.com.

Guys' Night at the Pool, Thursday, July 8, 8:00 pm

Not to be outdone by the ladies, an intrepid group of guys are organizing (reportedly without the help of any wives) their own evening of cards, drinks and other classic male bonding rituals about which we have only read. Same drill as for the gals -- BYOB and a snack to share, must be 21 or over, and no glass, please. Convene on the back deck behind the snack bar, gentlemen, and bring your tired, hungry, and yearning-to-be-free (for the evening, anyway) selves for the first guys' night of 2010 at Glenwood.

Swimathon and Golf Tournament to Support Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), July 17-18

This year marks the 6th annual 24-hour swimathon held by the Glenwood community to raise money for and awareness of the fight against juvenile diabetes. Initiated in honor of a deceased Glenwood member, Tim Durkin, who gave so much to our pool community and suffered from this disease, what started as "Swim For Tim" has grown to embrace several activities involving pools members of all ages and raised more than $43,000 for the JDRF.

Event founders Kathy Levintow and Rand Ruggieri are passing on the swimathon organizers' torch to Mary Margaret and John Hathway this year. While the Hathways probably own the record for the largest number of swimathon participants from a single family, they still need lots of help from all of us. What can you do?

  • Swim (a lot) for money (a lot). Decide how many laps you can swim in 24 hours and get family, friends, co-workers and neighbors to sponsor you with pledges. You can pick up pledge forms at the front desk, and sign up for lanes and times there, too.
  • Swim and don't sleep (a lot) overnight. If you are 13 or over and a member of the swim or dive team, you can get your laps in during the teen overnight held at the pool Saturday, July 17, starting at 10:00 pm and ending at 8:00 am the next day. You'll need to get your parents' permission and pay a modest fee to cover breakfast and snacks. The permission form will be available at the pool within the next week, but you can get your donor form now and start gathering your pledges. Parents can help by chaperoning, too -- more info on that to come.
  • Count (a lot) of laps being swum. We'll need volunteers to help count our swimmers' laps and record them with the event organizers, because competition for those cool prizes is pretty fierce and everyone wants every lap counted! So even if you're not up to swimming, you can still help as a volunteer.
  • Golf (but not in the pool.) The third annual “Golf for Tim” Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation charity fundraiser, which is part of “Swim for Tim” weekend, has found a new home close by. This year, it will take place at Sligo Creek Golf Course on Friday, July 16. Tee-off time for the nine-hole, shotgun start is 2 p.m; we have room for 44 people and the whole golf course to ourselves for three hours. Please show up at least 15 minutes beforehand and be ready to walk the course (no carts) -- that’s good for fighting diabetes, too.

This year's cost is just $80 per person, $52.50 of which is tax deductible and will be donated to JDRF. There will be games and prizes, and a cookout starting at about 5 p.m with a cash bar in the Clubhouse. So sign up today! Foursomes preferred, but we’ll put singles and doubles together if need be. Email your reservations to Merrill Goozner at mgoozner@starpower.net. Or call him at 301-367-0630 (his cell phone). You can also leave checks payable to Glenwood Pool in the Goozner family folder in the pool office or mail them to Merrill Goozner, 9404 Pin Oak Drive, Silver Spring, MD 20910.

Annual Crab Feast, July 31 at 6:00 pm

The Glenwood Crab Feast returns for another year of all-you-can-eat crustacean goodness on Saturday, July 31, poolside at 6:00 pm. Book the babysitter, for it's an adults-only event with piles of spiced Maryland crabs, various sides and a live band provided by the pool; you bring the beverage of your choice, your best dance moves and the pleasure of your company. More info on costs to come, but you'll start hearing announcements about ticket sales at the pool soon, so mark your calendar now! This is another event that needs YOUR HELP to be enjoyable for everyone, so let us know if you are willing to lend a hand by contacting board@glenwoodpool.org.

MEMBERSHIP ITEMS

Checking In

As many of you know, the antiquated computer which housed the membership data base has gone to electronic heaven, and with it, the old pool pass system for verifying membership. Starting July 1, members will need to sign in at the front desk and wait until the staff verifies the signatory's name on the membership list before entering the pool. Members may also be asked to present a picture ID, either at sign-in or when the manager on duty verifies the sign-in list during periodic check-ins with the individuals who are at the pool.

These procedures may seem onerous, but we are aware that non-members are using pool facilities without guest passes and invitations by pool members. This is not fair to dues-paying members of the pool community, many of whom have waited more than two years to join, and it stretches the staff and our supply and equipment resources. We respect your investment in this pool membership and ask for your patience and cooperation as we do our best to make sure that the pool serves those of you who are paying to support it. Devising a new system for monitoring pool usage is a priority for the off-season, and we would welcome your input as we proceed in the coming months.

Dues Date

A reminder that if you signed up for the payment Plan B for your dues this year, the remaining balance is due JULY 1. Please send your checks made out to "Glenwood Recreation Club" to us at:

	Glenwood Recreation Club
	PO Box 2407
	Silver Spring, MD 20915

Where Is That Towel?

Probably in the Lost and Found behind the snack bar. Not to scare you, but there are all kinds of things back there, and we remind you to check it if you are missing a towel, swim suit, water bottle, coffee cup, or pair of Spiderman underwear. And to scare you a little, the lost and found will get cleared out by July 4 and periodically thereafter, so if you have been meaning to look for whatever you misplaced, now would be a good time...

Play Ball...

... on the grassy areas only, please. Some new landscaping adjacent to the back deck needs time to take root, and kids chasing balls through the plants won't help the erosion around that area. There's a great space to kick and run back by the shed, and it's usually shady there, too. Please, no ball play on the deck.

Pitching In

We're always in need of extra hands and donations of usable goods, for instance:

  • Grillers at midday for the July 4 party.
  • Watering the plants -- check out the notice posted next to the staff pics by the managers' office.
  • The annual crab feast requires help with shopping and setting up the food for the evening.
  • Also, we could use a new (or preferably, operable and used) upright freezer for the snack bar to replace the one that died last year.

And wait until you see the to-do list for the off-season!

TIGER TALES: SWIM AND DIVE TEAM NEWS

Glenwood's Tigers are on the attack, with the swim team 1-1 going into its third scored meet of the summer this Saturday at home. An opening loss on June 19 at Mohican was followed by a resounding victory at home against Lake Marion last week, the second of five consecutive home swim meets in a two-week period that began June 23. Plenty of exciting swimming to see from Tigers of all ages, and surely you've heard the cheering at the meets, pep rallies and practices. There is spirit and camaraderie in and out of the pool, and the kids are having a blast no matter what the score is. At season's end we'll recap the new team records and recall some of the outstanding performances, but suffice it to say that if you're swimming for the Tigers this summer, it's a great experience all around. Special thanks to the many parents who contribute so much to making our meets run so smoothly, and of course to our coaches, who inspire individual accomplishment and team sportsmanship on a level unmatched in the county.

The diving Tigers have had a rockier start, with the June 20 opening meet postponed and made up in an unusual doubleheader this past Sunday. Glenwood dove against East Gate Sunday morning and hosted Mill Creek Towne later in the afternoon, the latter meet concluded only last night because of weather delays. Results of either meet are not available at this writing, but Division I is proving to be tough territory for the Tigers to conquer. As on the swim team, however, there is enthusiasm and determination aplenty among our large group of Glenwood divers, and lots of fun to be had as well.

Those of you looking to augment your collection of Glenwood memorabilia should check out the offerings of swim team sportswear and spirit gear czarina Beth Ginter and her crew -- you can be decked out in Glenwood goodies of all kinds in no time. See what's available by coming to any of the upcoming home swim meets through July 7 and/or perusing the pre-order form at www.glenwoodpool.org/docs/GlenwoodSportswear2010.pdf. You don't need kids on the teams to declare your love for all things Glenwood!

Notes from the Editor

While we are doing a much better job of keeping the web site updated, there are occasional discrepancies between what you read in this newsletter and what is posted on the site. The newsletter is usually the most up-to-date record, but as several of you have already figured out, you can email me at kjclark@erols.com if you need something clarified.

Also, the board of directors meets roughly every two weeks during the summer to assess how things are going and keep track of duties we all take on. If you want to put something on the agenda, let me know. FYI, our next meeting is July 8 before Guys' Night.

Look for the next Gazette in about two weeks or so, with periodic Gazette grams to update you on things before then. Questions or comments -- contact Karen Clark, newsletter scribe and member of the board, at kjclark@erols.com.
